🌿 What is the Low Emission Zone (LEZ)?
The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) covers all 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region. Its purpose is to improve air quality by gradually restricting access to the most polluting vehicles.
Since 1 January 2025, Euro 5 diesel vehicles are no longer allowed to drive freely within the LEZ.
Failure to comply may result in an administrative fine of €350.

Don’t panic!
In many cases, the first detection results in a warning rather than an immediate fine.
You then have three months to regularise your situation.
If your vehicle is detected again after that period, you may receive a €350 fine, with a maximum of four fines per year.

✅ Solution 2: Check Whether You Qualify for an Exemption
Certain people and vehicles may continue to access the LEZ despite the restrictions.

You may park your vehicle at one of Brussels’ Park & Ride (P+R) facilities and continue your journey by public transport.

If you regularly travel to Brussels, replacing your vehicle may be the most cost-effective long-term solution.
The Brussels-Capital Region also offers financial incentives for certain private individuals, self-employed persons and businesses replacing polluting vehicles.

“I’ve installed a particulate filter, so I can keep driving.”
❌ Incorrect.
Installing a particulate filter does not change your vehicle’s Euro standard.
“I need my car for work, so I’m automatically exempt.”

Professional use alone does not entitle you to an exemption.
⚖️ Can You Challenge an LEZ Fine?
Yes.
Not every fine is legally justified.

- incorrect licence plate identification;
- incorrect Euro emission standard;
