Driving License in Belgium: Postponement of the New Regulation
Temporary Relaxation for Candidates
In Belgium, candidates for a driving license are currently allowed to take their theoretical exam in one region and their practical exam in another. This flexibility, which many candidates appreciate, was initially set to end on June 1, 2025. However, Walloon Minister of Mobility François Desquesnes has decided to postpone this measure.
The purpose of this new rule was to prevent candidates from traveling to other regions where the exam is perceived as easier or where waiting times are shorter. However, given the concerns of both candidates and examination centers, the Walloon government has decided to delay the implementation of this restriction.
Why Was the Measure Postponed?
The primary reason for the postponement is to give candidates more time to adapt and to avoid administrative bottlenecks. Many individuals had already started their training with the expectation of taking their exams in different regions, and an immediate application of the rule could have led to logistical complications.
Additionally, consultations are ongoing with organizations responsible for driving tests, such as the Autosécurité and AIBV networks, to ensure a smoother transition.
What Does This Mean for Candidates?
For now, candidates can still take their theoretical exam in one region and their practical exam in another. However, they should remain attentive to future changes, as the measure is likely to be implemented at a later date.
It is advisable for candidates to check with their regional exam centers to stay informed and avoid any unpleasant surprises. Driving schools will also keep up with regulatory updates to provide the best guidance to their students.
A Delayed but Inevitable Reform?
While the postponement provides a temporary solution, it does not mean the reform has been abandoned. The Walloon government appears determined to eliminate this interregional flexibility in the medium term. The objective remains to standardize access to the driving license and to prevent regional disparities from leading to strategic “relocations.”
In the meantime, authorities will continue discussions with stakeholders to ensure a fair and efficient implementation of the new rules.
