New Option: Renew Your Driver’s License Online Starting October 1, 2024
As of Tuesday, October 1, 2024, it is now possible to renew your driver’s license for categories A (motorcycles) and B (cars) online through the BelDrive platform, managed by the FPS Mobility and Transport. This new process offers significant time savings for citizens looking to renew their license without having to visit administrative offices in person.
How does it work?
To request a new driver’s license, you can log into BelDrive using your electronic ID card or the Itsme app. Once your request is submitted, your municipality will send you an email with details on how to pick up your new license. It is important to note that you must still appear in person to verify your identity.
What about other license categories?
Currently, only A and B licenses can be renewed online. However, an upcoming expansion of the BelDrive platform will allow for the renewal of other categories, including BE, C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E, and DE.
This development is part of a broader modernization of driver’s licenses, which began in 2013 with the introduction of plastic licenses in the ID card format, valid for ten years. Additionally, paper licenses will need to be replaced with European-format licenses by 2033.
